Walk to Craigwell Cottage from Waverley Station

It’s very easy to walk to Craigwell Cottage if you are arriving in Edinburgh by train at the main railway station, Edinburgh Waverley.  The main thing to remember is that you need to exit the station by the Calton Road exit.  To find this, locate the Marks and Spencer “Simply Food” store in the station forecourt.  Then, with that on your right, head towards the set of steps straight ahead.  Up and over the track and you’ll exit on to Calton Road.

Turn right (downhill), keeping the railway on your right.  High above you you’ll see a fort-like building (The Governor’s House – all that remains of the old Calton Jail.)

Under the railway bridge, keeping straight on and on the left side of the road.  Soon you’ll see a red sandstone building to your left, with distinctive green woodwork.  That’s Nether Craigwell.  Turn left through the archway “Nether Craigwell” sign is visible on the left side of the archway.  Immediately to your right is Craigwell Cottage – the former gatehouse for Craigwell Brewery.
