Edinburgh in November – a great time for visitors who are Searching for Scottish Ancestors. The city is a little quieter before we gear up for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Therefore making it an ideal time for visitors who are looking to do some research into their Family Tree.
When asked to provide “Tip from the Locals” for a website writing about things to do in Edinburgh in January, I thought long and hard about what to recommend. Ideas sprang to mind, like exhibitions, galleries, cafés to visit, museums and more.
One thing which I love to do on holiday is to read literature about where we are visiting. Not guidebooks, but fictional literature set in a particular city or county. Think EM Forster’s “Room with a View” when visiting Florence, or Patrick Gale’s “Notes from an Exhibition” when in Cornwall, and you’ll understand what I mean. Read more

As a frequent visitor to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo over the years, our family has got into something of a routine in planning our trips to this amazing spectacle, so when asked for some advice about where to park if coming to the tattoo from out of town, I realised that our experiences probably had enough ‘old timers’ knowledge in them to merit a little article on how we do it.
